What Are Nutritional Supplements – And Do You Actually Need Them?

A qualified nutritionist and 22-year USANA Brand Ambassador explains what supplements are, why modern food no longer delivers complete nutrition, and how to decide whether supplementation is right for you.

I’ve been asked this question more times than I can count over the past 22 years: “Do I really need supplements, or is it just marketing?” It’s a fair question, and it deserves an honest answer rather than a sales pitch.

The short answer is this: for most people living a modern lifestyle, eating modern food, supplementation isn’t just useful, it’s filling a genuine nutritional gap that diet alone can no longer close. Let me explain why I believe that, and why effective, peer-reviewed science backs it up.

What Nutritional Supplements Actually Are

A nutritional supplement is any product that contains a dietary ingredient intended to supplement the diet. That includes vitamins, minerals, herbs, amino acids, enzymes, and other nutrients that you might not be getting enough of through food alone.

A critical point here is supplement, not replacement. No supplement replaces a balanced diet, adequate sleep, regular movement, and stress management. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something you more than likely don’t need.

What supplements do is fill the gaps where good nutrition is slipping, and in 2026, those gaps are wider than most people realise.

Why Modern Food No Longer Delivers Complete Nutrition

This is the part that most supplement marketing glosses over, but it’s the most important piece of context for understanding why supplementation has become genuinely necessary for most people.

Our agricultural practices have changed dramatically over the past 50 years. The drive for higher crop yields, faster growth cycles, and longer shelf lives…and certainly higher farming profits have come at a direct cost to the nutritional density of the food we eat.

A study published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition compared nutrient data from 1950 to 1999 across 43 different vegetables and fruits, finding reliable declines in protein, calcium, phosphorus, iron, riboflavin, selenium and vitamin C.1

Put simply: the banana you eat today is not nutritionally equivalent to the banana your grandparents ate. The soil it grew in has been depleted of minerals through repeated intensive farming. It was likely picked before it was ripe and ripened artificially in transit. By the time it reaches your fruit bowl, a meaningful portion of its nutritional value is gone.

Just think of our Bananas that we buy from the supermarket, in 2-3 days, the skin starts to speckle as they decline in quality, they are going off. But check out the sticker, it’ll say ‘Ecuador’, ‘Bahamas’ or ‘Fiji’. The transit time from picking, packing, location port time, shipping, destination port time again, customs, supermarket delivery, where they may sit for 2-3 days before you buy them!

Most out-of-season vegetables and fruit are picked green and gas-ripened on the way to you. The Sun ripens fruit and vegetables, not gas.

Add to this the reality of modern life: we don’t eat enough vegetables. We don’t eat enough fibre – way less than the 30g that’s recommended per day. We rely on convenient and processed nutrient-poor foods far more than our Grandparents did.

We live more stressful lives, sleep less, and our bodies are under more oxidative stress than ever before. And the consequences are becoming visible.

Degenerative disease is arriving earlier than ever before in history, cancer rates continue to climb to record levels, and conditions like type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease are increasingly common in people in their 40s and 50s.

This is why I became a USANA Brand Ambassador 22 years ago. Not because I wanted to sell supplements – but because I understood, as a nutritionist, that the gap between what our bodies need and what our diets deliver was growing. And I wanted to help people bridge it intelligently, and with a quality product that is second to none..

What Supplements Are. And What They Aren’t.

It’s worth being clear about the different categories, because “supplement” is a broad term that covers everything from a basic vitamin C tablet to a sophisticated pharmaceutical-grade cellular nutrition system.

Vitamins

Organic compounds your body needs in varying amounts to function properly. Most vitamins can’t be made by the body in sufficient quantities, so they must come from food or supplements. There are 13 essential vitamins: A, C, D, E, K, and the eight B vitamins. Long-term deficiencies in any of them cause specific, measurable health problems over time

Minerals

Inorganic elements that your body needs for everything from bone structure to nerve function to immune response. Key minerals include calcium, magnesium, zinc, iron, potassium, and selenium. Unlike vitamins, minerals come from the earth – plants absorb them from the soil, and we absorb them from plants. When soil is depleted, or when we pick early for transporting, mineral deficiency follows.

Antioxidants

Compounds that neutralize free radicals – these are unstable molecules produced by normal metabolism and accelerated by stress, pollution, poor diet, and UV exposure. Free radical damage is associated with premature ageing and the development of chronic illness and disease. Key antioxidants include vitamins C & E, selenium, and plant-based compounds like resveratrol and grape seed extract. These powerful antioxidants are what our bodies need on a daily basis to help prevent degeneration.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Essential fats that your body cannot produce on its own. Critical for cardiovascular health, eye, skin, teeth and brain function as well as reducing systemic inflammation. The modern Western diet is severely deficient in omega-3s while being disproportionately high in omega-6s, an imbalance strongly linked to inflammatory disease. The Mediterranean diet is one of the richest in plant-based foods, balanced with lean protein and essential fats, and a diet that westerners need to embrace to help prevent illness later in life.

Probiotics

Live beneficial bacteria that support gut health, immune function, and increasingly, mental health through the gut-brain axis. Modern diets and antibiotic use have significantly depleted the diversity of our gut microbiomes. Take probiotics daily – please!

Who Genuinely Needs Supplements

Honestly? Most people. But let me be more specific about who has the greatest need:

People eating a typical Western diet – high in processed foods, low in vegetables and whole grains. The nutritional gaps in this pattern of eating are well documented.

People over 40 – nutrient absorption decreases with age. Your body becomes less efficient at extracting and utilizing key vitamins and minerals from food, even if your diet is good.

People under chronic stress – stress depletes B vitamins, vitamin C, magnesium, and zinc at an accelerated rate. If you’re running hard at work or life, your nutritional needs are higher than average.

People with limited sun exposure – vitamin D deficiency is endemic in countries like NZ and the UK, particularly during the winter months. Research from the University of Auckland has consistently shown that a significant proportion of New Zealanders have suboptimal vitamin D levels.2

Athletes and active people – higher physical output means higher nutritional demands. The oxidative stress of intense exercise increases antioxidant requirements significantly.

People eating plant-based diets – although applauded for their healthier approach to food choices, vegan and vegetarian diets carry specific deficiency risks, particularly for vitamin B12, iron, zinc, omega-3s, and vitamin D.

How to Read a Supplement Label

This is where most consumers get lost – and where the quality difference between supplements becomes most visible.

Look for the form of the nutrient, not just the name. Magnesium oxide is cheap and poorly absorbed. Magnesium glycinate or citrate is significantly more bioavailable. Vitamin D2 is the synthetic form; D3 (cholecalciferol) is the form your body recognizes and uses most efficiently. The label should specify the form.

Check the dose against established research. Many supermarket supplements contain token amounts of nutrients – enough to put the ingredient on the label, not enough to have a physiological effect. Look for doses that align with what peer-reviewed research identifies as meaningful. These brands compete on price, not quality.

Look for third-party testing certification. Reputable manufacturers submit their products to independent testing organisations like ConsumerLab, NSF International, or Informed Sport. These certifications verify that what’s on the label is what’s in the product – at the potency stated, free from contamination, and able to dissolve properly so your body can absorb it.

Check manufacturing standards. Look for GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) certification. In the USA, the FDA regulates supplement manufacturing under 21 CFR Part 111. Pharmaceutical-grade GMP is the highest standard – it means the facility meets the same manufacturing rigour as prescription drug production.

The Bottom Line

Do you need supplements? If you’re eating a varied whole-food diet, living a low-stress life, getting adequate sun exposure, sleeping well, and exercising moderately, your need is lower than most.

But for the majority of people living modern lives in 2026, supplementation with high-quality, well-formulated products is one of the most evidence-based investments you can make in your long-term health.
